A standard medical ultrasound scan generally takes between 20 to 45 minutes to execute, depending entirely on the specific complex structures being imaged (e.g., a single-organ vascular check vs. a full abdominal sweep).
External transabdominal scans are completely painless. A water-based conducting gel is applied to the skin to allow the transducer probe to glide smoothly and transmit sound waves cleanly. You will only feel mild, temporary physical pressure as the sonographer moves the probe over the targeted area. Internal transvaginal pelvic scans may cause slight temporary pressure discomfort but are highly tolerated.
