Though the term opiate most literally refers to chemical derivatives like those found in an opium poppy, opiates today are a much wider class of drugs. Mostly, an opiate refers to any narcotic or opioid-like chemical that acts like morphine or opium. This mostly means chemicals found in painkillers such as hydrocodone or oxycodone. Opiates are generally used to treat extreme pain and can have relaxing effects. They are also very addictive when used improperly.
