If you or someone you love needs intensive therapy after a stroke, a brain or spinal cord injury, an amputation, or major orthopedic surgery, the Las Vegas valley has a short list of dedicated inpatient rehabilitation options.
Acute rehab facilities in Las Vegas and Henderson include three Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals (Las Vegas, Desert Canyon and Henderson), Dignity Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Henderson, PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Centennial Hills, and the acute rehabilitation unit at Kindred Hospital Las Vegas – Flamingo.
One honest note first: Sahara West Urgent Care & Wellness is not an inpatient rehab hospital. What we do is help with the steps on either side of one, such as pre-op clearance before surgery, post-op follow-up, X-rays, and primary care once you are home. This guide covers both, so you can find the right facility and the right support in one place.

What Is Acute Rehab?
Acute rehab, also called inpatient rehabilitation, is hospital-level recovery care with a daily therapy schedule. You stay at the facility with 24-hour nursing, a rehabilitation physician overseeing your care, and a team of physical, occupational and speech therapists working toward specific goals. The aim is to get you functioning well enough to go home.
Medicare describes the standard in terms of intensity. An inpatient rehabilitation facility program generally means at least 3 hours of therapy per day, at least 5 days per week. In well-documented cases it can instead be about 15 hours of therapy across seven consecutive days. It also involves more than one therapy discipline, including physical or occupational therapy, plus regular physician visits.
Who typically needs acute rehab?
Acute rehab is most often recommended after:
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury or other brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Amputation and prosthetic training
- Hip fracture, joint replacement or complex orthopedic surgery
- Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis
- Multiple trauma after a serious accident
The hospital team decides whether you are a good candidate. In general, you need to be medically stable enough to take part in intensive therapy and likely to benefit from it.
Acute Rehab vs. Nursing Home vs. LTACH vs. Outpatient Therapy
“Rehab” covers several levels of care, and families often get these confused at discharge.
| Level of care | What it is | Typically best for |
|---|---|---|
| Acute inpatient rehab (IRF) | Intensive daily therapy, 24-hour nursing, physician oversight | People who can take part in about 3 hours of therapy a day and are expected to improve significantly |
| Skilled nursing facility (SNF) | Skilled nursing plus therapy, generally at a lower intensity | People who need ongoing nursing care or a slower recovery pace |
| Long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) | Extended hospital-level care for complex medical conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds or sepsis | People who are still medically complex and need longer acute-level treatment |
| Outpatient therapy / home health | Therapy visits while you live at home | People who are stable, mobile enough to go home, and need ongoing strengthening or skills work |
Some Las Vegas hospitals blur these lines. Kindred Hospital Las Vegas – Flamingo, for example, combines long-term acute care beds with a smaller acute rehabilitation unit. Kindred’s Sahara campus on West Sahara Avenue is a long-term acute care hospital, which is a different level of care from acute rehab. Ask exactly which level a bed or program is.

It offers inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational and speech-language therapy for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injuries and other conditions.
PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Centennial Hills

Kindred Hospital Las Vegas – Flamingo (Acute Rehabilitation Unit)
This is a 12-bed acute rehabilitation unit inside a 78-bed hospital, with 24-hour clinical care. It serves stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic, neurological, amputation and trauma patients. Because it sits within a long-term acute care hospital, it can suit patients who also have complex medical needs.
How to Choose an Acute Rehab Facility
Hospitals must involve you in discharge planning, so ask your case manager or social worker for a list of options and take your time comparing them. Questions worth asking each facility:
- Does it treat my condition? Ask about stroke, spinal cord, brain injury or amputation programs specifically.
- Is it in network with my insurance? Ask the facility and your plan, because coverage and authorization differ by plan.
- What does a typical day look like? Ask how many hours of therapy per day, which disciplines, and whether therapy is one-on-one.
- Which physicians oversee care, and how often do they visit?
- What technology and equipment does the therapy gym have? Examples include robotic gait trainers and balance systems.
- How close is it for family? Frequent visits and family training sessions often help recovery.
- Can we tour first? Several facilities list tours or invite you to call.
- What happens at discharge? Ask about home-safety planning, equipment, outpatient therapy and follow-up appointments.
How Admission and Coverage Work
Most admissions begin with a referral from your hospital team or physician. The facility then reviews your records and clinical needs, and your insurance may require authorization. Medicare Advantage and private plans have their own rules, so confirm with your plan.
Many people move to acute rehab straight from a hospital stay after stroke, injury or surgery. Starting the conversation early with your surgeon or care team, ideally before a planned surgery, helps avoid delays.

When It’s an Emergency, Don’t Wait
Urgent care is not the place for a possible stroke or severe injury. Call 911 immediately for sudden face drooping, arm or leg weakness, trouble speaking or understanding, sudden vision loss, sudden loss of balance, or a severe head, spine or other major injury. Acute rehab begins only after emergency treatment and hospital stabilization.
Looking for Drug or Alcohol Treatment Instead?
“Rehab” can also mean addiction treatment, which is a different path from the medical rehabilitation described above. If that’s what you need, see our substance abuse treatment programs or call (702) 248-0554.
