A fourth-generation laboratory antigen/antibody test can detect HIV earlier than antibody-only testing, but no HIV test can detect infection immediately after exposure.
The CDC reports that a laboratory fourth-generation antigen/antibody test using blood from a vein can usually detect HIV approximately 18 to 45 days after exposure.
If your possible exposure was recent, tell your healthcare provider exactly when it occurred. You may need testing now, later, or both depending on the circumstances.
