Sahara West Urgent Care & Wellness

New to Las Vegas? How to Establish Primary Care

Sahara West primary care physician consulting with a patient in a modern medical clinic in Las Vegas.

Why Establish Primary Care Right After You Move?

A primary care provider (PCP) is the clinician who knows your history, tracks your health over time, manages ongoing conditions, and coordinates specialists. Setting this up early helps you:

  • Avoid gaps in medication. Your new provider can review your prescriptions before you run out.
  • Keep chronic conditions on track. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid conditions, and asthma all need ongoing monitoring.
  • Stay current on screenings. Preventive visits catch concerns before symptoms appear.
  • Have somewhere to go when you’re sick. A clinic that already has your records can treat you faster.

Primary Care vs. Urgent Care: Which Do You Need?

Primary Care Urgent Care
Best for Checkups, preventive care, chronic conditions, medication management, long-term planning Sudden illness, minor injuries, same-day concerns
Relationship Ongoing, with a provider who knows your history As-needed
Examples Annual physical, blood pressure follow-up, diabetes care Flu, infections, sprains, minor cuts

For life-threatening emergencies such as chest pain, trouble breathing, or signs of stroke, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. At Sahara West, you can use both urgent care and primary care in one location.

How to Establish Primary Care in Las Vegas: 6 Steps

Step 1: Sort Out Your Health Insurance First

Your coverage determines which clinics you can use affordably, so settle it before you search.

Your situation What to do
Employer plan Check your plan’s provider directory. Your coverage may have changed with your address.
Marketplace (Nevada Health Link) Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Outside that window, moving may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, generally within 60 days.
Medicare Original Medicare is accepted nationwide. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check whether it covers your new area.
Medicaid Medicaid is state-specific, so you generally need to apply in Nevada.
TRICARE Update your address in DEERS and confirm your plan option.
No insurance Ask about self-pay pricing and membership options (see below).

Sahara West accepts a wide range of plans, including Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Medicare, Medicaid, Molina, and TRICARE. See the full accepted insurance list and call to confirm your specific plan.

No insurance? The Sahara West membership plan is $95 a month on a 6-month plan, built for people without insurance. It includes up to two primary care visits a month and lowered co-pay pricing on tests and checkups. Eligible patients can also explore payment plans through Cherry and CareCredit.

Step 2: Find a Clinic That’s Accepting New Patients

When comparing clinics, look for:

  • Accepting new patients, and how soon the first visit can happen.
  • Hours that fit your life. Sahara West is open Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm.
  • Same-day or walk-in options for when you can’t wait.
  • On-site services like labs, EKG, X-ray, and ultrasound, so you aren’t sent to several locations.
  • Language support. Sahara West has Tagalog- and Hawaiian-speaking providers on-site.
  • Location. Sahara West serves patients from Summerlin, Spring Valley, Enterprise, Paradise, Winchester, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and the Strip area.

Step 3: Request Your Medical Records

Ask your previous doctor’s office how to request records. Most use a release form, and many patient portals let you download your history yourself.

  • Under HIPAA, providers generally must respond to a records request within 30 days, with one possible 30-day extension. Don’t wait until the week before your visit.
  • You can usually request records in the format you prefer, including electronic.
  • Records don’t have to be transferred before your first appointment. A clear summary from you works too.

Ask for visit notes, a medication list, lab and imaging results, immunization records, and any specialist reports.

Step 4: Book Your New-Patient Visit

Call or book online. Tell the front desk you’re new to Las Vegas and establishing care. Mention any ongoing conditions or medications, because that helps them schedule enough time.

Step 5: Prepare for the Visit

Bring:

  • Photo ID and insurance card (or ask about self-pay options)
  • A list of all medications, supplements, and doses, or the bottles themselves
  • Any records you’ve collected
  • Your family medical history
  • A short list of questions and concerns

Step 6: Build Your Plan

At or after the visit, ask about:

  • Which screenings and vaccines are due
  • Prescription refills and monitoring
  • Referrals to specialists you may need locally
  • How to reach the clinic for same-day concerns

What Happens When You Change Your Primary Care Provider?

Changing PCPs is routine, and there’s generally no limit on how often you can do it. Here’s what to expect.

Your records move to your new provider. Your new clinic may request them from your old one, or you can bring them yourself. Sending records can take days to weeks, so start early.

Your medications get reviewed. Your new provider will go over everything you take. They may continue, adjust, or ask for more information before prescribing, and some medications may need an additional evaluation.

Your first visit is longer. Expect a full history, a health review, and a discussion of your goals. This visit is about getting to know you.

Referrals may reset. Specialist referrals from your old provider may not carry over. Tell your new provider about any specialists you see.

Your insurance may need to be updated. Some plans ask you to name a PCP. Check with your insurer so claims process correctly.

Your old doctor isn’t notified in a way that matters to you. There’s no penalty for switching. Request your records, and you’re done.

You may need a bridge. If you’re out of refills or sick before your first appointment, a walk-in visit can cover the gap (see next section).

What to Expect at Your First Primary Care Visit

  1. We learn your history. Medical conditions, surgeries, medications, allergies, and family history.
  2. We discuss your current concerns.
  3. Your provider evaluates your health. This may include a physical exam.
  4. We recommend testing if needed. Labs, screenings, or imaging.
  5. We create a plan. Follow-ups, preventive care, and next steps.

Need Care Before Your First Appointment?

Waiting weeks for a new-patient slot isn’t always realistic. At Sahara West, walk-ins are welcome, and no appointment is required for same-day care.
