| Screening | Diagnostic | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it’s for | People with no symptoms getting routine testing | People with symptoms, or a known or suspected exposure |
| Example | Annual chlamydia and gonorrhea testing for a sexually active woman under 25 | Testing because of burning, discharge, a sore, or a partner’s positive result |
| How plans often treat it | May be covered with no cost-sharing when it meets recommendations and you’re in-network | Often subject to your plan’s usual deductible, copay or coinsurance |
The line between the two isn’t always obvious, and how a visit is coded can differ by plan. Don’t assume a visit is “free” or “not covered” until you’ve checked your own benefits.
What Insurance Commonly Covers
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most private plans that aren’t grandfathered must cover certain preventive services without a copay or coinsurance, even before you’ve met your deductible, when you use an in-network provider. According to HealthCare.gov, the adult preventive list includes:
- HIV screening for everyone ages 15 to 65, and other ages at increased risk
- Syphilis screening for adults at higher risk
- Hepatitis C screening for adults 18 to 79
- Hepatitis B screening for people at high risk
- STI prevention counseling for adults at higher risk
- PrEP (HIV prevention medication) for HIV-negative adults at high risk
Preventive lists for women also include chlamydia and gonorrhea screening for sexually active women who are younger or at higher risk. Exact eligibility depends on your age, sex, pregnancy status and risk factors, so your provider helps determine whether a given test qualifies.
Coverage by Plan Type
Employer or Marketplace plans. Recommended screenings are usually covered at no cost when in-network. Symptom-driven testing, extra tests and the visit itself may count toward your deductible or require a copay. Older “grandfathered” plans and some short-term plans may not follow the same rules, so check yours.
Original Medicare. Medicare Part B covers screenings for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B for people who are pregnant or at increased risk, once every 12 months, plus up to two behavioral counseling sessions per year. You pay nothing if your provider accepts assignment. Medicare also says your primary care provider needs to order the screening. HIV screening is covered separately. Medicare Advantage plans must cover at least what Original Medicare does, but the rules and networks can differ.
Medicaid and CHIP. Rules vary by state and plan. Call to confirm whether your plan is accepted for your visit and tests.
TRICARE, Kaiser Permanente, Humana, CareSource and others. Sahara West’s website lists these among the plans it welcomes, along with most major plans. Coverage for specific lab tests varies by plan, so verify your benefits first. You can see more on our insurance page.
Costs Insurance May Not Fully Cover
Even with good coverage, watch for these:
- The office visit. A screening may be covered while the visit for symptoms is billed under your regular cost-sharing.
- Additional tests. Tests beyond the recommended screening may be billed separately.
- Out-of-network labs. Your clinic and its lab can be billed separately, so ask about both.
- Treatment. Prescriptions are usually a separate benefit from testing, and their cost depends on your pharmacy coverage.
- Repeat testing. Retesting after treatment or a recent exposure may be billed differently from routine screening.
How to Check Your Coverage in About Five Minutes
Call the number on your insurance card, or check your member portal, and ask:
- “Is Sahara West Urgent Care & Wellness in my network?”
- “Is STD screening covered as preventive care for someone my age?”
- “If I have symptoms, will testing be billed as diagnostic, and what will I owe (deductible, copay, coinsurance)?”
- “Is the lab used by this clinic in-network?”
- “How are my claims and statements sent, and can I request confidential communications?”
You can also call us at (702) 248-0554 before you come in and ask what we’d need from you to help estimate your costs.
Will STD Testing Show Up on Someone Else’s Insurance Statement?
This is a common concern for anyone on a spouse’s, partner’s or parent’s plan. Insurers typically send an Explanation of Benefits (EOB), a statement listing services and amounts, to the policyholder.
STD testing is handled as confidential medical care at the clinic. But billing statements come from the insurer, not the clinic. Under HIPAA, you can ask your health plan to send communications to a different address or by another method. Some states and insurers offer broader options. Ask your insurer about its confidential communications process before the claim is submitted, and ask how it handles EOBs when no balance is due.
No Insurance, or Don’t Want to Use It?
You still have options:
- Self-pay. Sahara West welcomes patients with or without insurance. Call (702) 248-0554 for an estimate of expected visit and laboratory costs.
- Membership. Our website notes that a monthly membership can waive the $95 self-pay fee. Ask what that covers for your testing, and see our membership plans.
- Payment plans. Eligible patients can explore Cherry or CareCredit to pay over time, subject to approval and each provider’s terms.
- Free community testing. The Southern Nevada Health District offers free walk-in Express Testing for people without symptoms. If you have symptoms or want testing and treatment in one visit, a clinic visit may be the better fit.
Cost shouldn’t be the reason you put off testing. Many STIs can be present without symptoms, and finding them early usually makes treatment simpler.

FAQs
Does health insurance cover STD testing?
Usually, at least partly. Many plans cover recommended screening at no cost when you’re in-network, while symptom-driven testing is often subject to your deductible, copay or coinsurance. Coverage depends on your plan, age, risk factors and provider network.
Is STD screening free with insurance?
It can be. ACA-compliant private plans must cover certain preventive screenings without cost-sharing when you use an in-network provider. The visit, extra tests and treatment may still carry costs.
Does insurance cover STD testing if I have symptoms?
Often yes, but it may be billed as diagnostic care, so your deductible, copay or coinsurance can apply. Call your insurer to find out what you’d owe.
Does Medicare cover STD testing?
Original Medicare Part B covers screenings for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B for people who are pregnant or at increased risk, once every 12 months, with no cost if the provider accepts assignment. It also covers up to two counseling sessions a year, and HIV screening is covered separately.
Will my parents or spouse see my STD test on their insurance statement?
Possibly, if you’re a dependent. Insurers often send an EOB to the policyholder. Ask your insurer about confidential communications before the claim is processed.
Does urgent care take insurance for STD testing?
Many do. Sahara West welcomes a wide range of insurance plans, including Kaiser Permanente, TRICARE, Humana and CareSource, but you should verify your specific plan and lab coverage before your visit.
How much does STD testing cost without insurance?
It varies by the tests ordered and the lab. Call Sahara West at (702) 248-0554 for an estimate of expected visit and laboratory costs.
Can I get tested without using my insurance?
Yes. Self-pay is available, and eligible patients can explore payment plans or membership options.
