What is included in a physical exam?
A physical exam is a chance for a doctor or nurse practitioner to check in on your overall health and wellness. This includes checking your vital signs (a blood pressure reading, heart rate, and respiratory rate), as well as discussing your health history and any concerns you currently have about your health. The provider examines you for any signs of illness and will listen to your heart and lungs.
Sometimes, the practitioner may recommend certain lab tests or preventive screenings based on your age, gender, and health status. They may refer you to other types of health specialists or can help you get prescriptions for medications if need be. A physical exam is a good chance to touch base with a doctor about your health and make sure you’re staying on top of your health before issues arise.
Be sure to bring a list of any medications you take to your exam, a list of questions you may have about your health, and any health records you have as well.
